BRYAN BOETTIGER

The genesis of Bryan Boettiger’s Atari: Color Fields, or "Light Series" occurred some 20 years ago with a gift of an Atari video game. This mysterious technology of these delicate games unsafe in his excited hands were more than once botched in the insertion of the cartridge, producing random eye-dazzling bands of color. This visual was never forgotten creating a portal to groundbreaking ideas exhibited in the artist’s current photography; In particular, the de-objectification of the photographic medium. Centipede 10, Alpha Beam With Ernie 1, Asteroids 1&2, Pitfall 5, simply and brilliantly represents the union between a camera and a poorly inserted Atari Cartridge. For Boetittger, this series is a continuum in his exploration of a peeling away of subject matter until all that's left is light, color, and the buzz of a Sony Trinitron.
