VALERIE ARBER

Valerie Arber lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Marfa, Texas.  Her prints and other works on paper involve geometric structures arranged against blank backgrounds, resulting in glowing or gyrating retinal effects. "SPELL", her recent installation in Basel, Switzerland consisted of several hundred hand-printed, adhesive circles applied directly on the walls conveying the dual inference of alphabet and hypnotic trance.

The power of Arber's patterning lies in its ability to generate a vibrating, pulsing sensation while remaining very still and contained. Her work looks familiar but mysterious all at once. In addition to language and science as references, pearls that belonged to her mother are frequently a source she draws upon for their literal and symbolic connections to the miraculous forces of the natural world. Arber has exhibited widely including a solo exhibition at Eugene Binder Gallery in Marfa, Texas. She was a visiting artist at Tamarind Institute in 2006.
