MAGGIE MICHAEL

Control and manipulation have played a significant role in Maggie Michael’s process and ideology. In her work, Michael uses an allegorical approach to recording events that are manipulated and embellished into a state that teeters between violence and bliss. Michael’s paintings and drawings house references to landscape, bodies, and weather.

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Maggie Michael has lived and worked in California and is now living and working in Washington, DC. She has exhibited in Los Angeles, Raleigh, Baltimore, Washington, DC, and New York City. Michael is a recipient of the 2004 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painting and Sculpture Grant. Her work has been featured in At Length magazine and reviewed in The Washington Post and Art in America.
